ABOUT US

Virtuoso Content wasn’t founded with any grand plan in mind.

In the early 2000s, our founder, Adam Kosloff, was trying to build a career as a screenwriter. To pay the bills, he took on freelance web writing projects. Then, in 2013, as he and his wife started a family, he scaled that freelance work into an agency.

The goal wasn’t to build a company with lofty values or an inspiring mission. It was simply to create lots of content for profit.

But work has a way of changing the people who do it.

As Virtuoso’s team and the projects they were working on started to grow, they had an uncomfortable realization: so many content builds caused so much suffering for everyone involved.

Sometimes the published copy was bleah, or simply wrong, and thus underserved (or even misled) the reader. Sometimes projects went off the rails because of poor scoping, weak quality control, or miscommunication. Sometimes the team itself suffered, with freelancers slogging through miserable Saturday-night rewrites under unclear direction.

There had to be a better way.

There is. In all the chaos, Adam realized that what he really wanted was a company that did good work but where no one suffered — not the clients, or the writers, or Adam himself. That, he understood was Virtuoso’s real reason for being: Content Without Suffering.

No Suffering isn’t a value concocted in a conference room. It comes from the trenches, from people working with the live ammo of real projects

We also realized that No Suffering depends on two complementary ideas

Radical Ownership. We’re not all sitting together in an office peering over each others’ shoulders while we work. Our model depends on finding exceptionally competent, self-starting, trustworthy people who take full responsibility for their work. They exercise their best judgment on their projects, manage their time, and gladly fix their mistakes. Everyone on our team — writers, project managers, editors, leaders — takes pride in the caliber of their work.

Action Creates Clarity. Motion >> theory. We can’t know if something’s going to work until we try it, we figure. If we hit a dead end, so much the better: now we know where the snags are and what we need to do next to break through.

These principles have guided Virtuoso through more than thirteen years of growth. Today, our team numbers nearly a hundred people. We’ve served more than a thousand clients and written hundreds of millions of words

And, as it turns out, the arrival of AI, which many assumed would lay waste to the writing profession, has only reinforced what we believe. Sure, informative copy has become commoditized. Anyone can generate words at the touch of a button.

But judgment, expertise, originality, taste, and emotional intelligence — the qualities that Google, AI systems, and human readers alike deeply crave and reward — remain the province of professional, human writers.

Along our journey, we also discovered something else… about our name.

We aren’t the virtuosos. Our clients are.

Our job isn’t to be the smartest people in the room. It’s to help the people who are — the exceptional lawyers, founders, physicians, engineers, and other subject-matter experts who hire us — become known for what they know.

When we do our job well, the spotlight never lands on us. It lands exactly where it belongs: on the people whose expertise deserves to be seen.

Our job is simply to help exceptional law firms and businesses communicate what they know, earn the trust they’ve earned, and amplify their expertise so they can fulfill their missions.

Our Team

Adam Kosloff, Founder and CEO

Adam Kosloff

While in college, Adam nearly fell into the active volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island, due to a series of terrible misjudgments only a 20 year-old could make.

This brush with disaster prompted him to abandon his ambitions to be a geophysicist — volcanoes are best admired from afar, he concluded — and instead make his mark as a writer: a career that, as it turned out, would expose him to hazards far more harrowing than mere molten lava.

After graduating from Yale, Adam moved to Los Angeles to pursue screenwriting. He had some successes — for instance, writing episodes of Spaceballs: The Animated Series for the legendary Mel Brooks. In between gigs, he churned out massive amounts of freelance web copy. During one three-week stretch, to finance his wedding, Adam wrote 679 pages and gave himself such bad carpal tunnel syndrome that he couldn’t hold a steering wheel for a month.

As the clients kept coming — and he and his wife, Claire, had one, then two, then three children — circumstances demanded that he up his game. In 2013, Virtuoso Content, LLC, was born. What started as a side hustle with a few writers helping Adam cook evolved into a full-service agency guided by the motto, “Content Without Suffering”: that is, the business of online writing should, at the very minimum, do no harm to readers, clients, or writers.

Outside of work and family, Adam’s interests sound like a Mad Lib assembled by a geeky 4th grader: he meditates an hour a day (and has for two decades); plays tournament chess in pursuit of the National Master title; sings in opera competitions; and writes about an alternative scientific theory of obesity at the Farmer vs. Banker Substack.

Melody Westphal, Director of Operations

Melody Westphal

In Melody’s own words, “I really like a project, and I always need a plan.” That’s probably a good thing, considering her jam-packed life. After spending her early years as an Air Force kid, living everywhere across the U.S. from Washington to Delaware and as far away as the Congo, she joined the Air Force herself, where she served as a human resources manager. She left the Air Force as a Captain and redirected her energy toward raising three children.

Now she brings her talent for order and organization to Virtuoso, where she came on board in 2019 as director of operations. She’s helped steer this burgeoning business by creating systems, automations, and protocols to successfully manage a growing pool of clients and writers. But despite her self-proclaimed type-A personality, what she loves most about working at Virtuoso is the positive and warm energy and climate and the people who make each other feel appreciated and valued.

When she’s not busy keeping the ship right at Virtuoso, she has her hands full organizing the logistics of her three active teenagers. But she and her husband are proud parents, and it’s a job she loves. In her spare time, she finds her creative outlets in her kitchen, cooking anything and everything, and at the community theater, where she performs in plays and helps with production behind the scenes. Melody doesn’t have an easy time relaxing, and she’s OK with that. Instead, she’s channeling her energy into a life filled with purpose and productivity.

Mark Torres

Mark Torres

Mark’s professional collaboration with Virtuoso founder Adam Kosloff didn’t start in a conference room or over a business lunch. Instead, the pair met in college, singing together in the a cappella group, the Yale Whiffenpoofs. Rather than getting to know each other over a Zoom meeting, Mark and Adam built their friendship as performers, singing together at galas and on a three-month whirlwind global tour of more than 20 countries.

After going on their separate journeys, they nonetheless built parallel careers. Mark focused largely on digital marketing, and he founded his company Vertivine in 2012. By becoming an expert in SEO, building websites, and helping clients grow their businesses, Mark developed a long-term perspective for a company’s success. He leads with his passion for new ideas and then applies his engineer mindset to build the systems and processes to bring those ideas to fruition. He helps his clients till the ground and plant the seeds and then lets results build over time.

Years later, Mark and Adam reconnected and realized their businesses were two pieces of the same puzzle, working toward the same goals from different angles. Vertivine builds marketing partnerships, and Virtuoso delivers the quality content. Now Mark works with Virtuoso as an SEO partner, connecting clients with the content that helps them achieve their goals.

When he’s not working, Mark’s happy to explore the Colorado outdoors with his wife and 4-year-old daredevil daughter. He still loves to sing, although these days his concerts are generally limited to being the star karaoke performer among his friends.

Patrick J. O’Hara, Portfolio Manager

Patrick J. O'Hara

Patrick brings his smorgasbord of life experiences to his role at Virtuoso. He’s traveled extensively, lived abroad in Costa Rica and Mexico, and honed his expertise in a variety of trades over the years. After growing up all along the East Coast, he moved to Houston, TX, and attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. Since then, he has largely split his time between Houston, Phoenix, and Mexico. Over the years, he dabbled in jobs such as bartending, running an HVAC manufacturing operation, working as a recruiter, and managing properties in Cabo San Lucas.

Patrick joined Virtuoso in 2020, and he attributes his success as a Virtuoso portfolio manager largely to his willingness to take ownership of his actions—even when mistakes happen. In his client-facing role, he’ll do whatever it takes to keep his customers happy. And, of course, his membership in Mensa doesn’t hurt. He’s a smart guy who knows how to manage his constantly changing projects and responsibilities. And he’s fully on board with Virtuoso’s philosophy of “no suffering”—for clients or the Virtuoso team.

Patrick and his wife are now happily settled in Arizona, where he works with Virtuoso clients from the comfort of his and his wife’s shared home office. On the side, he’s started his own golf repair business, fixing clubs and installing grips for Arizona’s large golfing community. When he’s not engrossed in one of his work projects, he loves getting out on the golf course or spending time with his wife, whether on a travel adventure or a simple date night close to home.

Lorene Kohleffel, Client Operations Coordinator

Lorene Kohleffel

While Lorene jokingly describes herself as a “vault of useless information” thanks to her love of reading, her eagerness to learn about new topics is a perfect fit for working with Virtuoso’s diverse clients. Her previous jobs as a recruiter and tour operator involved countless phone calls and in-person conversations. While she values that connection, working at Virtuoso gives her the perfect balance of human interaction and uninterrupted focus. Since joining Virtuoso in 2022, she most enjoys learning about different industries and then generating quality content for her clients.

As a Texan for almost her entire life, Lorene still loves traveling and has seen much of the world, both during her brief stint living in Germany and while running a tour company for retirees. Now she lives in a small suburban Texas town, with her three kids (including a set of twins) off to college. She may be a minimalist with no tolerance for clutter, but that penchant definitely doesn’t extend to animals. As evidence, she and her husband foster dogs while also caring for their own motley crew of pups.

Stephanie Rowe, Lead Editor

Stephanie Rowe

Stephanie has spent much of her life in college classrooms, first as a student earning her bachelor’s degree in art history and her Ph.D. in comparative literature and then for many years as a professor of interdisciplinary humanities. But after maxing out on grading papers, she decided to take her love of working with words in a different direction.

That’s when Virtuoso Content came into the picture. As someone who enjoys working with language and making it sound just right, Stephanie is the perfect person to fill the role of Virtuoso’s lead editor. Beyond her propensity to dive into content, she also enjoys collaborating with her fabulous Virtuoso colleagues.

Stephanie also harbors a passion for animal rights and wildlife conservation. Whether she discovers poisoned prairie dogs in a small Colorado town or an injured squirrel on the side of the road, she can’t turn her back on her non-human neighbors. She’s always taking on new projects to protect wildlife and their habitats. In her spare time, she’s dedicated herself to (re)learning French — it’s harder than she remembers, but also more fun.

Jen Kovats, Project Manager

Jen Kovats

Jen brings her love of problem solving to just about everything she does, whether that’s project management, workflow optimization, or even rock climbing. After earning her degree in English literature, she ventured into graphic and visual design, watching YouTube videos to learn Photoshop and Illustrator. She then went back to school to earn her master’s degree in instructional design. After she graduated, her life took a different turn, and she and her partner had their first daughter.

Now Jen has joined the team at Virtuoso as a project manager, combining her passions for reading and problem solving. As someone who appreciates systems and automation, she’s enjoying the nitty-gritty of the way things work behind the scenes at Virtuoso.

As a lifelong New England resident, Jen loves getting out on the trails with her favorite hiking partner, her chocolate lab, Lou. She’s also a big fan of rock climbing, which lets her conquer her fear of heights—or, rather, falling off them—in small, manageable doses while figuring out her next move up the wall. These days, she’s most dedicated to her latest life adventure, watching her daughter, Mara, learn to grow into the world.

The Virtuoso team stretches well beyond project and portfolio managers and editors. At the core of the content production lies a team of writers scattered across the country (and even internationally) working toward a common goal — content without suffering.

Over the years, Virtuoso has worked with more than 100 freelance writers. Among our roughly 60 active writers are multiple New York Times bestselling authors, attorneys, legal writing instructors, university professors, English teachers, and journalists from publications like The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Atlantic. Together, the team has written hundreds of millions of words across virtually every kind of publication and industry.

But being a part of the Virtuoso team involves more than just being a talented writer. Virtuoso believes in fostering a culture of extreme competence and extreme freedom. We hire remarkable people, give them the guidance to get them on their way, and then trust them to take ownership of their work. We’ve built a team that owns mistakes, communicates openly, solves problems, learns from what doesn’t work, and continually improves. Our writers share our belief that content should do more than try to sell something — it should help people. We create content as a way to let readers learn, feel understood, and look at problems with a fresh perspective.

Virtuoso owes a good part of its success to our internal systems, which allow a distributed team to work together seamlessly. Our integrated workflows mean multiple writers can contribute to enormous topical authority projects while keeping the finished product cohesive and consistent.

At Virtuoso, we don’t only choose our team of writers, project managers, and administrators carefully — we choose our clients carefully, too. We work best with ambitious people who value expertise and craftsmanship and expect excellence. Collectively, we’ve completed thousands of projects for thousands of clients. We’ve worked with attorneys, CEOs, founders, CMOs, and marketing leaders who rely on us to produce engaging, informative content. And we’ve gained the experience to know how to solve even the trickiest problems as they arise.

Ultimately, we trust our team members to generate the highest quality work, and we’ve figured out the formula to build a team that knows how to deliver.

OUR EDITORIAL NETWORK

Beyond the Leadership Team

Virtuoso’s editorial network is a pool of professionals who write about subjects they actually know. Practicing attorneys. Legal journalists. Financial professionals. Academic specialists. Generic content from people who don’t understand a subject signals nothing to search engines and helps no one who reads it.

We do not use AI text generation for client deliverables. Every piece is human-written and edited by a human.

THE WRITING POOL

50+ Writers Who Know What They’re Writing About

Every piece of content is produced by someone who understands the subject matter, not someone who researched it for 20 minutes before typing

Practicing Attorneys

Active bar members who write about the practice areas they work in every day. Case law, procedure, strategy, all from people who’ve actually argued the cases.

Legal Journalists

Experienced reporters trained to research, fact-check, and translate complex legal and regulatory subjects into prose that non-specialists can read and trust.

Professors and Specialists

Academic and professional depth on tax, regulatory, financial, and technical subject areas. The writers you reach for when a subject requires more than surface coverage.
